TikTok vs Storyvine

Updated: Apr 7, 2021

TikTok has been all over the news lately, so it’s no surprise that we’ve been getting a lot of questions about that platform, and how it compares to Storyvine. Since we’re very different from TikTok, we decided that this merited a blog post.

TikTok is a social media and distribution platform where people create, watch, and share videos. It’s made for entertainment, a place where creative people can show off their creativity. That’s why it’s so popular – because there are a lot of really creative, clever people out there. It’s a fun place, and a world in itself. There’s definitely a reason why users go down the proverbial rabbit holes on TikTok.

Storyvine is not a social or distribution platform. Think of us as a video production company in an app – a utility platform that walks real people through telling their stories. We’re perfect for organizations that want to create professionally-produced videos without having to hire a writer, production crew, or editor. We excel at executing replicable stories such as constituent stories, patient testimonials, product reviews, thought leadership...any time you want to use real people to explain why they support you, that is what Storyvine excels at.

Let’s break it down even more:

Creativity

TikTok is a consumer app. Anyone can download it for free and start creating whatever they want. It is all about creativity. Even businesses and brands on TikTok are (or should be) creative.

Storyvine is for businesses and organizations, and takes away the stress of having to be creative. Users don’t need to worry about structuring what they’re going to say, or creating graphics, or editing the video. All they have to do is talk. Our VideoGuide templates walk people through telling their story, from how to tell it, to where to stand, and then our technology stitches it all together into a branded video.

Structure & Control

TikTok offers little to no control for organizations. The best TikTok videos are created by people who understand what will perform well on the platform. So if you’re hiring someone (an influencer or in-house) to create TikTok videos, you’re placing a lot of trust in the creator. Plus, videos are about a minute long or shorter, so there’s not a lot of time for structure or deep messaging. It’s a hard task.

Storyvine is designed for businesses and organizations, and we focus on structure and control. Our VideoGuide templates walk people through sharing their experience, and you know exactly what questions and prompts they are going to answer. Videos are generally between 2 and 5 minutes, allowing people the time to tell a story that resonates. Once the videos are filmed, they are automatically uploaded to a dashboard that you manage. So you decide if that video goes out into the world.

Marketing

TikTok is best for top of the funnel marketing – capturing attention and driving awareness. This may change as creators get the ability to sell products right from their channels, but even then, the type of product they sell is likely going to be limited.

Storyvine is better for further down the funnel, because the videos function as authentic user reviews and commentary. Someone can watch a real person explain why they like a product, company, candidate, etc., and sometimes there is nothing more powerful than that.

Hopefully this clears up the differences between TikTok and Storyvine, which are very different platforms. If you’re looking to film lots of regular people providing their views, feelings, and experiences, then Storyvine is the way to go. If you want to create clever videos to attract attention, then hire a creative person and use TikTok. Both platforms have their place in the online world.
